Community Advent Assembly and Tea - Monday, December 15, 2014

Advent, from Latin adventus, meaning “the coming,” is the period including the four Sundays just before Christmas. It signifies the coming of the end of one season and a start of another. Advent is celebrated through assemblies each week leading up to the winter break. Each Monday morning during Advent, the children are gathered together to listen to a special story, share in song, and light the Advent candles.

The magic of the Advent season may be best expressed by the memories of Kimberton Waldorf School alumnus, Dan de Angeli '76.

“Imagine a great hall without furnishings crowned with a dome of glass. Imagine little children and not so little children filling it with their voices, unanimous in song. Kimberton Waldorf School has just such a space. When I was a student there years ago, "The Court," as we called it then, became the gathering place for the entire school on the four Monday mornings leading up to Christmas. We called this time "Advent" and celebrated the coming holiday with songs and stories.” Click here to read the entire passage

We invite you to celebrate the spirit of Advent with us. Parents and community members are welcome to join the Advent assembly which is followed by a community tea. Attendees can socialize, enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea and share in the fellowship of the season.

Songs of the Season

There are many wonderful songs to celebrate the season. We would like to share two that are sung at our Advent celebrations.

Light the Advent Candle
“Advent Song” from DANDELIONS by Mary Lu Walker.

Verse one:
Light the Advent candle one;
Now our waiting has begun.
We have started on our way;
Time to think of Christmas Day.

Chorus:
Candle, candle, burning bright,
Shining in the cold winter night.
Candle, candle burning bright,
Fill our hearts with Christmas light!

Verse Two:
Light the Advent candle two;
Think of humble shepherds who,
Filled with wonder at the sight
Of the Child on Christmas night.

REPEAT CHORUS

Verse Three:
Light the Advent candle three;
Think of heavenly harmony.
Angels singing “peace on earth;”
At the blessed Savior’s birth.

REPEAT CHORUS

Verse Four:
Light the Advent candle four;
Think of joy forevermore.
Chris child in the stable born;
Gift of love this Christmas morn.

REPEAT CHORUS

Verse Five:
Light the Christmas Candle now;
Sing of donkey, sheep and cow.
Birthday candles for the King;
Let the alleluias ring!

REPEAT CHORUS

People, Look East
Words and Music: Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965), 1928

1. People, look east. The time is near
Of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able,
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the guest, is on the way.

2. Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare,
One more seed is planted there:
Give up your strength the seed to nourish,
That in course the flower may flourish.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the rose, is on the way.

3. Birds, though you long have ceased to build,
Guard the nest that must be filled.
Even the hour when wings are frozen
God for fledging time has chosen.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the bird, is on the way.

4. Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim
One more light the bowl shall brim,
Shining beyond the frosty weather,
Bright as sun and moon together.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the star, is on the way.

5. Angels, announce with shouts of mirth
Christ who brings new life to earth.
Set every peak and valley humming
With the word, the Lord is coming.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the Lord, is on the way.
